What is the history of the Great Dunmow Maltings & its artefacts? At night you can hear footsteps & voices in the museum below. We are keen to find out more about the building & the stories it has to tell.
Join us for our first visit of 2025 to Great Dunmow Maltings! This beautiful Grade II listed building dates back to the 16th Century & was in use until its closure in the 1940’s. They used the traditional method of turning barley by hand.
It is also home to the Great Dunmow Museum which displays many historical artefacts including the Flitch Chair used in the famous Flitch Trials which takes place every leap year. Also on display is the 1850 Great Dunmow fire engine & the Fordham Lantern Clock built in the town by John Fordham in 1710. Great Dunmow is a historic market town dating back to Roman times.
